Student Visa

If the purpose of your stay in Japan is for study for more than 6 months, you may be classified as a "student" and obtain a student visa. You may be permitted to stay for a period of 6 months or 1 year from the time of arrival, and it is possible to extend the period to stay another 6 months or a year. In general, the period which a student can stay in Japan for the purpose of studying Japanese is a maximum of 2 years. Those students who study Japanese for more than 20 hours per week and for longer 6 months may apply for a student visa at Nihongo Center. You can also apply for re-entry permission to leave Japan for home countries or other countries temporarily for a short period during a summer or winter holidays, and for permission to extend their period to stay at the end of each term at Nihongo Center.

Short-term Visa

Language school students may obtain a short-term student visa (for the purpose of learning Japanese language). Or depending on the country , students can come to Japan without visa (for 90 days or 180 days) as there is an agreement of the exemption of visas between Japan and the county. You will be permitted to stay for 90 days (or 180 days), but it is not be able to extend the period to stay.

Those who wish to stay in Japan for a short period may apply for this visa or come without visa. Also, those students who could not file for a regular student visa by deadline may apply for this visa (or without visa) and stay in Japan until the next enrollment period.

In such a case, students must leave Japan once because it is not permitted to extend a short-term visa (or without visa).

Countries with Japanese visa waiver

As of April 2010, Japan had taken measures concerning the waiver of visa requirements with 61 countries and regions, as shown in the accompanying table.
Nationals of these countries and regions are not required to obtain a visa to enter Japan when the purpose of their visit is commerce, a conference, tourism, visit to relatives/acquaintances, etc.
However, only in cases in which the foreign national engages in paid activities in Japan, and in cases in which the period of stay of the foreign national exceeds the period of stay stipulated in each arrangement, it is necessary to obtain a visa.
