The latest Discover Kyoto Program event, Sanjusangendo and Pottery Making has finished! At Sanjusangendo we witnessed Toshiya, a traditional Japanese archery event. The sounds of the arrows combined with the sight of the brilliantly-colored kimonos the participants wore resulted in an extremely compelling experience. For the pottery portion of the event, students used a potter’s wheel to create unique cups and dishes. It seemed very simple when the instructor showed us how to do it, but in actuality it was quite difficult. In this fun atmosphere we gained a better appreciation for the craft and eventually managed to create our own individual pieces. We can’t wait for them to be fired!

DKPのプログラムで三十三間堂と陶芸の体験に行ってきました！三十三間堂では、「通し矢」という 伝統的な弓道の行事が行われており、美しい着物を着た女性がビュンという音とともに弓をひく姿はとても迫力がありました。
そして、陶芸体験では、ろくろを使って、それぞれに自分だけのお皿やカップをつくりました。先生がやって見せてくれると、とっても簡単そうなのに、実際にやってみるとなかなか土が言うこ とをきいてくれません。その難しさと楽しさに陶芸の奥深さを感じつつ、最後にはみんなそれぞれに個性のある作品ができあがりました！焼きあがるのが楽しみです。

December 13th is Saint Lucy’s Day, a festival celebrated in Sweden before Christmas.

Discover Kyoto Program

Fushimi Inari (Harvest Festival) and Sake Brewery Tour

19 students participated in this latest Discover Kyoto Program event. The day started with a visit to the Fushimi Inari Taisha, where students were able to witness the Harvest Festival, a Shinto ritual to celebrate the year’s rice harvest. Students spent the better part of 2 hours passing under the hundreds of vermillion gates as they explored the sprawling shrine. Everyone left hoping to return again soon, saying there was no way to fully experience the mystery and beauty of Fushimi Inari Taisha in a single visit.

Next the tour moved to a sake brewery where students were shown around the brewery and given explanations about the sake brewing process. They visited the archive library and finally were able to try 3 different types of sake. It was unfortunate that students were only allowed to drink a little. Many students purchased their own sake, saying “I want more!” and “This will make a great present for my family!”

During your stay in Kyoto, we encourage you to visit this brewery, and the traditional town of Fushimi for yourself.

京都ディスカバープログラム

伏見稲荷（新嘗祭）と酒造見学

　１９名が参加した今回の京都ディスカバープログラム、まずは伏見稲荷大社へ行き、新嘗祭という収穫を祝う神事を見学しました。朱色の千本鳥居をくぐり、約２時間かけて大社のなかを散策しました。「一度ではもったいない。また行きたい。」そう思わせるところでした。

　酒造見学では、酒蔵を案内してもらい、お酒の作り方を教えてもらいました。資料館を見学し、最後にお酒を３種類試飲しました。少ししか飲めないのが、残念でした。「もう少し飲んでみたい！」「家族へのお土産に！」と購入している学生も少なくありませんでした。

　京都にいる間に、ぜひ酒造の街と知られている伏見の古い街並みを一度見てみてください。

Sports Event at Takaragaike on November 3rd

We enjoyed Ekiden (a long-distance relay race), soccer, softball, dodge ball, rope jumping and Ultimate! We had a really great time there!

Project Presentations

Friday, September 16th , Wednesday, September 21st

3 classes presented on Friday, September 16th. These classes are made up of students who have been studying Japanese for only half a year or 1 year at most. However these students managed to create extremely interesting presentations that covered a wide variety of topics. Some students used their experiences practicing kyudo and making pottery as a base for their presentations. Other students talked about their favorite places, such as all-you-can-eat restaurants, ninja residences, and Japanese-style cafes. After gathering information through field trips and interviews, they presented their findings in the form of a role play. Judging from the quality of everyone’s presentations, the entire process, from preparation to final presentation, gave the students a chance to expand their Japanese knowledge beyond what they could have learned in a normal classroom setting.

2 classes presented on Wednesday, September 21st. These classes are studying Japanese at the N1 and N2 levels, so we expected their presentations to be excellent. They did not disappoint. The N2 level class chose to present about “Work in Japan.” Since the majority of the students in this class are planning a future related to Japan in some way, they decided to interview foreigners working in Japan and compile each person’s experience and advice into a cohesive presentation that was both entertaining and informative. The N1 level presentation theme was “Kyoto.” As expected from the highest level class at Nihongo Center, these students dug deep into the history and culture of Kyoto to give us insights and information not found in any guide book. In particular, the final words of the presentation “Always remember the history of the ground beneath your feet, and cherish the people around you as you journey forward” echoed in our hearts long after the presentation had ended.

発表会

9月16日（金）、9月21日（水）

9月16日（金）に3クラスの発表会がありました。このクラスのほとんどの学生は日本語を始めてからまだ半年から1年の学生たちです。しかし、学生たちはよく工夫をし、大変おもしろい発表を作り上げました。内容も多彩！弓道や陶芸を体験しそこから自分たちが興味を持って調べた内容について話したり、自分たちが好きな場所、たとえば食べ放題レストランや忍者屋敷や和カフェなどにフィールドワークに行ってその場所を紹介したり、お話づくりやロールプレイをしたり…。学生たちはその発表の準備、本番、振り返りの過程で普段の授業では学べない多くの学びを得たようです。

9月21日（水）に2クラスの発表会がありました。このクラスはN1・N2レベルの日本語を学ぶ学生たちのクラスです。ですから、もちろん発表はすばらしいものでした。ひとつのクラスのテーマは、「仕事」です。このレベルの学生たちのほとんどは日本に関係がある将来を思い描いています。そこで、外国人として日本で働くということについてさまざまな方法を使って調べた内容を発表しました。そしてもうひとつのクラスのテーマは「京都」です。さすが一番上のレベルの学生たちだけあって、その発表は知られざる京都を掘り起こした深い内容のものでした。「足元にあるこの土地の歴史を感じ、日々の出会いを大切にしながら過ごしましょう」という最後の言葉は心に残るものになりました。

The Fall semester began here at Nihongo Center on October 17^th. We have a large number of new students whose presence has created an energetic, diverse environment that is going to make studying Japanese together an entertaining and rewarding experience. We encourage everyone to study hard while enjoying a fun-filled semester meeting new people and experiencing the culture and beauty of Kyoto!

10月17日から秋期授業がスタートしました。

在校生に加えて、今期もたくさんの新入生が入学しました。

The results of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) were recently released. At Nihongo Center we had 20 out of 37 students who passed.

N1 level – 1 student

N2 level – 9 students

N3 level – 6 students

N4 level – 4 students

Congratulations to all the students who passed! We encourage every student to now focus on passing the next JLPT level in December.

7月に行われた日本語能力試験の結果が発表されました。
日本語センターからはＮ１　１名、Ｎ２　９名、Ｎ３　６名、Ｎ４　４名が合格しました。

As another typhoon was approaching, 13 students from Nihongo Center and 12 students from Ritsumeikan University joined together for the 4^th Discover Kyoto Program, an event which included Yuzen dyeing, a tour of Ritsumeikan University, and a visit to Ryoan-ji Temple.

During the Yuzen dyeing experience, students chose their favorite patterns and then dyed them onto handkerchiefs. Although the students did not have experience with this kind of art, the results were quite impressive!

While the students from Nihongo Center and Ritsumeikan University were both a little shy at first, the time they spent together dyeing handkerchiefs and eating lunch at the university helped them bond and by the end they were talking amongst each other like good friends. This was a wonderful opportunity for the Nihongo Center students to practice what they have learned in class and spend time with Japanese people their own age.

台風が近づく中、日本語センターの学生１３人と立命館大学の大学生１２人の計２５人が参加してくれた今回の京都ディスカバープログラムは、友禅染の体験、立命館大学の学食でのランチ、そして龍安寺見学という内容でした。

友禅染では、それぞれ好きな絵柄を選び、一生懸命ハンカチを染めていました。みなさんの作品はなかなかの出来栄えでした。

最初はお互いに緊張し、恥ずかしがっていたものの、友禅染の体験や大学での食事など、同じ時間を過ごしていく中で、徐々に打ちとけ合い、楽しい時間を過ごしていました。日本語センターの学生にとって、日本人と触れ合う絶好のチャンス。みんな今まで習った日本語を駆使して、有意義な時間を過ごしていたように思います。

After last week’s typhoon had gone, we had a BBQ party at Lake Biwa on July 23^rd. It is an annual event here at Nihongo Center, and almost 80 people, including Ritsumeikan University students, were able to attend the party.

Although we had a mountain of food and drinks, within moments everything was gone. After eating and drinking, we swam in the lake, took pictures, had a Sumo tournament, and played SUIKAWARI. Later in the afternoon we had watermelon for dessert. We had a great time at Lake Biwa, and I’m sure that everyone who attended came away with lots of lasting memories. 

心配していた台風の影響もなく、絶好のバーベキュー日和となった7月23日に、わたしたちは毎年恒例のバーベキューパーティを琵琶湖で行いました。

日本語センターの学生をはじめ、教職員、学生の友達、それから立命館大学の学生など、総勢約80名という大人数でのバーベキュー。肉や飲み物も山のようにありましたが、あっという間になくなってしまいました。

おなかいっぱいになった後は、琵琶湖で泳いだり、ビーチで写真を撮ったり、相撲をしたり、スイカ割りをしたりと、とっても楽しい1日となりました。

 Students and teachers went together to Yoiyoiyama, the small festival that takes place two days before the main Gion Matsuri event. Yoiyoiyama is held quite close to the school, so it is very easy for people to attend. Usually we have lots of rain at this time of the year, but fortunately this year the weather was excellent.

 Most students bought yukata to wear for this festival, and changed at school before going. Everyone looked very stylish as they enjoyed the energetic atmosphere of the floats, food stalls, and crowds, and I think everyone had a great time.

7月15日にみんなで祇園祭の宵々山に行きました。日本語センターから少し歩くとすぐに祭の会場に着きます。例年この時期は雨が降ることが多いのですが、今年は良いお天気に恵まれました。
各々が浴衣に着替え、山鉾や屋台などを楽しみました。

日本そして京都の文化を体験できたのではないでしょうか。

Despite the bad weather forecast, we went on rafting and the Torocco train tour on June 18th(Sat) and we did not have much rain! How lucky!

Firstly, we took the Torocco train in Arashiyama. The journey was about 25 minutes and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Hozu river.

We got off the train in Kameoka station and had lunch there. After lunch, we were devided into 4 groups and started rafting! Some had experienced the rafting before and the other had not but both had a great time during rafting anyway! During the rafting, we climbed up the rock (3.5-4m) and jumped off to the river! That was awesome!

Time flies when you have fun. The rafting was over at 5 o’clock and we went home. I’m sure that everyone had a unforgettable experience!

6月18日土曜日、天気予報では雨ということでしたが、何とか大雨にふられることなく、わたしたちは嵐山へトロッコ列車とラフィティングの旅に出かけました。

まずは嵐山からトロッコ列車に乗りました。約25分間、トロッコから保津川のきれいな景色を堪能しました。

トロッコ列車で嵐山から亀岡へ行き、そこで昼ごはんを食べました。昼ごはんのあとは、4つのグループに分かれてラフィティングをしました。初めての人も、やったことがある人も、それぞれ楽しい時間を過ごしました。途中で、みんな3.5メートルの岩から川へダイブしました！それも素晴らしい経験になったことでしょう。

楽しい時間はあっという間に過ぎ、わたしたちは5時に解散しました。いい思い出ができましたね！

After 1 week suspension, we went hiking in Mt.Daimonji.

This is an annual event, and the view from the top of Mt.Daimonji is always awesome. We could see the whole Kyoto. I am sure that everybody had a refreshing time there. 

雨で一週間延期になっていた大文字山ハイキングに行ってきました。

毎年恒例の行事ですが、何度来ても大文字山から眺めは最高です。京都市内が一望できて、気分爽快！心も体もリフレッシュ出来たのではないでしょうか。

The discover Kyoto program has begun.

The first program was the meditation and Shojin cuisine.

Some students at Ritsumeikan university also came with us.

Believe it or not, the chief priest who has studied abroad tells us how to meditate in English fluently!

It must be a precious experience for students.

We are already looking forward to the next one!
 

ディスカバー京都プログラムが始まりました。第一回目は「坐禅体験と精進料理」です。
地元の日本人大学生も一緒に参加してくれました。留学経験のある住職さんが流暢な英語で坐禅の仕方を手ほどきしてくださいます。学生達にとっては大変貴重な体験になったのではないでしょうか。また次回が楽しみです！ 

Finally we have started the new term for the new students!

The classes for the new students were suspended for 1 month because of the occurrence of the earthquake, but we could begin the new term on May 9th without any problems.

Nihongo center is now lively again with students from all over the world!

新入生のみなさん、お待たせしました！
地震の影響で１ヶ月延期していた新入生の授業ですが、５月９日無事スタートすることが出来ました。日本語センターは、また新しい活気に満ちています。

今日から在校生の春学期が始まりました！地震の影響で1週間遅れてのスタートとなりましたが、無事みんな一緒に授業を始められることを嬉しく思います。またこれから楽しく日本語を学んで行きましょう！
新入生の授業は5月9日（月）からスタートです。 

The spring term for currently enrolled students began today! Although the starting date was postponed for 1 week due to the earthquake occurred in the north part of Japan, we could start studying Japanese together again without big problem. Let's keep enjoying learning Japanese!

For the new students, the term starts on May 9th.  

今、桜が満開です！　まるで新入生を京都に歓迎しているみたいです。

Cherry blossoms are now in full bloom as if they welcome new students here in Kyoto!

3月10日（木）に日本語センターでは学期の締めくくりとなる「タームエンド発表会」が行われました。

これは、授業やイベントを通して、経験し学んだことを各自が自由に日本語で発表する場です。

各学生がアイデアを凝らした、楽しい発表をしてくれました。

発表会は大いに盛り上がり、すばらしいものとなりました。

Nihongo Center had the term-end presentation on March 10th(Thu) to give the finishing touch for the courses. Students gave out freely in Japanese what they had learned and experienced through classes and field trips.

Each student gave a nice and enjoyable presentation full of ideas and feeling over the presentation ran high.

10月12日から約5ヵ月間続いた秋学期も、3月16日をもって終了しました。学生たちは、5か月という短い期間ではありましたが、それぞれ一生懸命日本語学習に取り組み、ゼロ初級だった学生たちも今では日本語で立派にコミュニケーションがとれるまでになりました！大学や専門学校に進学した学生、今期で帰国してしまう学生、来期も日本語センターで勉強を続ける学生等、進路は様々です。春は出会いと別れの季節、別れを惜しむ気持ちはもちろんありますが、同時に新しい出会いが楽しみでもあります。すべての学生たちにエールを送りたいと思います。

The Autumn term ended on March 16th. Students have been studying Japanese very hard since last October. Even though it was only 5 months, they have made lots of progress! Even students who was complete beginners at first can now communicate with Japanese people only in Japanese! That is absolutely awesome.

From April, some students go to university or college, some are going back to their country and others continue to study at Nihongo center. People move on in this time of the year. Farewell is always sad, but it is also nice to meet new people! I wish all the students all the best in their lives!

昨年はヨーロッパをはじめ北南米、アジア、オセアニアと世界各地から沢山の学生が日本語センターに入学してくれました。活気あふれる授業のお陰でスタッフも大変有意義な1年を送ることができました。感謝いたします。

Konnichiwa.I am Hideo Kurita, the principal of Nihongo Center.It is the start of the year full of hope!How did you spend the new year holidays? 

A lot of students from Europe, America, Asia and Oceania enrolled in the Japanese courses of Nihongo Center last year and all the staff had a fruitful year because of their classes full of young energy. I feel grateful to all of them.

Many students are coming to Nihongo Center in April this year, too.We all the staff are going to try our best to help the students progress Japanese and enjoy their staying in Japan.

今日から新学期がスタートしました。10月から沢山の新入生が加わり、学院内はまた新たな活気にあふれています。

これから楽しくて実りのある京都の留学生活になるように、みんな頑張って行きましょう！

The new term has begun! We have lots of newcomers now. The school is full of students. I hope everyone will have a wonderful time in Kyoto! 

当センター学生のオロブくんとハンさんが、MBSテレビの企画「京都でWa太鼓」に挑戦しました。9月1日に放送された演奏本番をご覧ください。

Our students, Olov and Han were selected as members of Wadaiko in Kyoto of the TV programme.  Please enjoy the performance played on September 1st.

初級クラスと中級クラスの合同発表会が行われました。3か月ほど前から少しずつ準備してきて、ようやく本番を迎えました。周到な準備と練習の甲斐あって、学生たちは自分たちの日本語力を十二分に発揮し、すばらしい発表会となりました。

Beginner class and intermediate class had an opportunity to report their projects in front of their teachers and classmates. They have been preparing for it  for about 3 months. As their preparation was pretty good and they practiced so hard, they gave a wonderful presentation to us. 

毎年恒例の琵琶湖でバーベキューをしました。今年の夏はとても暑い日が続いていましたが、琵琶湖に入ってリフレッシュできました。

The annual BBQ event took place in Biwako. It has been really hot this year but we swam in Biwako and had a refreshing time! 

大阪大学の学生さんを招いて、ビジターセッションが行われました。同年代の日本の学生とトークセッションすることで、会話もはずみ良い学習となります。

We had a visitor session with the students from Osaka university. It is a great experience for Japanese learners to communicate with native Japanese speakers in same generation as them.  

日本の三大祭のひとつ『祇園祭(Gion-matsuri）』が今年もやってきました。祭りが行われる四条烏丸周辺には日本語センターから歩いてすぐです。

Gion Matsuri, which is one of the biggest festival in Japan took place. SSHijo-Karasuma, where the festival is held,  is just around the corner from Nihongo center.

防災センターに行きました。

強風体験、地震体験、消火訓練などが体験できます。

課外授業第一段として東寺の縁日に行ってきました。露店の人たちとのやり取りを通して、日常会話の上達を目指すのが目的です。しっかり自分言いたい事を伝えられたでしょうか。

学生みんなで大文字山に登りました。 大文字山は毎年8月16日に行われる「五山送り火」の山のひとつです。京都市内が一望できる最高の眺めです。
